Is the Essendon saga over?

2 September 2013

Can someone explain some things to me about the Essendon matter which I don't understand?

The AFL under pressure from the Federal Government of the day signed up to the WADA code and the ASADA jurisdiction a few years ago.

This jurisdiction involves a process in relation to drug offences in breach of the WADA code.

This code has penalties which apply for the various offences under the code. As I understand the current matter to involve the taking of prohibited drugs, accordingly, why would the AFL negotiate the penalties until the ASADA investigation is complete? Unless I am missing something the answer must be because they are the AFL.

These current AFL charges related to bringing the game into disrepute. So what happens in the future in relation to any possible WADA breaches and potential charges arising out of the ASADA investigation - will there be any?

When will ASADA finally complete their investigation? Why did ASADA release its interim report? The timing seems strange.

We all await the next instalment in this long running drama.
