Minimum wage increase commences

4 July 2014

Following on from the Fair Work Commission's decision in June, the minimum wage will increase by 3% from the first full pay period after 1 July 2014.

The Full Bench of the Fair Work Commission noted that the "...relative living standards of award-reliant employees have declined over time" and that as a result, an increase in the minimum wage was necessary to rectify the widening gap between the low paid and those receiving at or above average weekly earnings.

The new national minimum wage will be $640.90 per week (based on a 38-hour week) or $16.87 per hour. This is an increase of $18.70 per week to the weekly rate or 50 cents per hour to the hourly rate.
